The convent of San Antonio Abad or Church of San Antón, is one of those places in Granada that, because it is in the commercial center of the city, hardly notices it. This magnificent temple is located at the confluence of Recogidas and San Antón streets.
In the year 1534 the order of Third Franciscans settled at the head of San Antón street. At that time the area was a suburb outside the city walls, and there they built a small hermitage.
The church and convent residence that we can see today began to be built in the 17th century, in the same place where the hermitage was. This church was one of the largest in Granada at that time. The temple was completed in the 18th century, when the works of the main chapel and the construction of the dome raised over the transept were carried out, by Alfonso del Castillo.
The exterior of the Convent of San Antonio Abad is made of brick and masonry caissons, with abundant rectangular windows with low-relief pediments, along with other Baroque decorative elements. On the façade two of Sierra Elvira stone made in the 18th century by Luis de Arévalo.
The doorway of Calle Recogidas is also presented in a semicircular arch on pilasters. The cornice has a broken pediment, crowned by ball-topped pinnacles, while in the center there is a richly decorated niche that houses an image of Saint Anthony.
The interior of the temple is a Latin Cross plan, with ten side chapels, and a fantastic chancel at the head, choir at the feet, and all covered with half-barrel vaults except for the transept dome. One of the wonders of the Church is its 18th century organ.
The convent rooms are attached to the church, and are arranged on three floors around a large peristyle cloister with Doric columns and a central fountain.
During the confiscation of 1835, the convent was occupied by the Capuchin nuns who have been there ever since.
Next to the apse of the church of San Antón, and behind her convent, stood the battery of Santa María Egipcias or de las Recogidas, where Mariana Pineda was taken after her arrest.
The church of San Antón is the one in Granada that remains open throughout the day. Entering it is a good opportunity to learn about the rich heritage of the city, take refuge from the heat of summer and admire the beauty of this temple.
Interesting and beautiful church, very popular in the city of Granada. Located between the lively streets of Recollects and San Antón, it offers us a sober stone exterior from the Sierra Elvira and an admirable baroque interior of enormous beauty, with valuable carvings of Pedro of Mena and great ornamental richness. The dome is worthy of competing with the best of other temples. It usually has very long hours so the visit can be made throughout the day. Very interesting and recommended.
The most beautiful church in Granada
Spectacular
Its baroque ornamentation is surprising inside.
